An impressive array of up to 40 privately-owned jet aircraft will make a low altitude visit to the Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow next April as part of the Hong Kong to Christchurch Silver Fern Air Race.

Warbirds Over Wanaka Community Trust Board face an additional challenge as we now accept responsibility for running both an airshow and developing a world class visitor attraction in the large hangar at Wanaka Airport

Out the window the weather looks somewhat bleak. The remains of last night rain lingers in the clouds above. Looking to the south the sky is a glowing shade of blue.

Royal Australian Air Force jets will be among the many ‘stars’ lining up to entertain thousands of spectators with a formation handling display at the Warbirds over Wanaka International Airshow held in New Zealand over the Easter weekend.

After flying from Auckland to Christchurch then driving through the hills to Wanaka my Photographer and I finally arrived.

A large collection of WW2 tanks, trucks and jeeps will be gathering near Tarras on Thursday to prepare for a convoy to Wanaka Airport where they will be taking part in the Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow.

This week aviation enthusiasts will be flocking to Wanaka by the 1000′s to get a glimpse of one of the world’s best and well known Warbirds Airshows.

The Mitsubishi Zero, one of the most feared fighters during WWII, was lifted by crane and transferred onto a truck for transporting by road to a secure hangar at Tauranga Airport.

“Super-fast, super-powerful and an extraordinary sight” is how Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow event manager, Mandy Deans, describes the F/A-18 Hornet.

In less than a month Wanaka once again come to life. The skies will fill with everything old and new.
