Opinion: Warbirds Over Wanaka Always Starts With a Free Lakefront Show.

There’s a specific kind of magic that settles over the lakefront every second Easter. Even before the main gates at the airport officially swing open, Wānaka treats us to what I reckon is the best freebie in the country. This year’s lakefront teaser was a bit of a misty one to start—definitely “cold and moist” as the locals were saying over their morning coffees—but once the ceiling lifted, it turned into an absolute cracker of an afternoon.

The shoreline was packed deep with people, and for good reason. It’s the one time you can stand with a punnet of hot chips and watch a de Havilland Vampire scream across the water. Seeing that silver twin-boom silhouette against the mountains is always a trip, especially when you remember it was our first real taste of the jet age back in the day. It was joined by the usual suspects—the Harvards with that signature snarl that rattles your teeth, and a Yak-3 that looked like it was doing about Mach 10 compared to everything else.

We also had a Huey hovering about, which is always a crowd favourite. I have to say, the chopper with the fire bucket actually ended up stealing the show. There’s something pretty hypnotic about watching them work the monsoon bucket with that much precision right in front of your eyes. It’s a cool reminder that these machines aren’t just museum pieces; they’re workhorses that keep our high country safe when things get hairy in the summer.

I did notice the atmosphere felt a little different without the NZDF parachute team dropping in this year. You usually look for those trails of smoke and the precision landings on the grass, so their absence was definitely felt by the regulars. But honestly, the sheer noise and grunt of the planes more than made up for it.

The best part of the whole day wasn’t even the metal in the air, though. It was looking at the kids around me while I was trying to frame up a few photos. Seeing a five-year-old nearly jump out of their skin with excitement when a Harvard banks over the water is what it’s all about. That’s how you hook the next generation of pilots. They were absolutely buzzing, and that energy is infectious.

It was a brilliant way to kick off Warbirds 2026. Despite the damp start, the weather held out exactly when it mattered, and the whole town seemed to be down there soaking it up. If this display was just the warm-up act, we are in for a massive few days at the airfield. I’m currently charging my camera batteries and digging out my thickest woolly socks, because if today was any indication, it’s going to be an epic weekend of aviation. Cheers to a great start—see you out there.
